DIY weddings are brilliant for natural, story-led photography. The day just unfolds at its own pace — people chatting, laughter popping up everywhere, little moments happening when you least expect them — and I simply blend in and capture it all as it happens.

I first met Claire & Lewis at a family shoot with their little boy, so when they mentioned they were planning a wedding, I was genuinely chuffed for them. They almost ruled me out straight away though — “It’s down in Devon,” they said, assuming it might be a bit of a trek.

Not a chance.

Once they told me their plans for a relaxed, boho-inspired DIY wedding, I was all in. Devon is perfect for celebrations like this, especially when the location means something personal. Lewis grew up in the countryside there, so it felt only right to bring everyone together in a place filled with memories.

The whole day carried that easygoing West Country charm. Open space, fresh air, no rushing about and no strict timelines — just friends and family properly enjoying themselves. Nothing felt staged or overly organised. It was simply a celebration that reflected them.

These kinds of weddings are an absolute gift for documentary photography. Moments happen naturally, conversations drift, laughter builds, and the story unfolds without interference. I just blend in with the guests and capture everything as it really happens.
